BOOMETIME - ABOUT US

MEET SANDRA

NAME:  SANDRA
AGE: 22, 28, 33, 38 (OK, fine…upward of 38)
LOVE:  Dogs, Coffee, Woodworking, Wine, Family, Friends, FOOD
DISLIKES: Traffic, Sanding, Miserable People

Hi, my name is Sandra and I live in the Western Cape, South Africa.   I began my love affair with woodworking whilst I was staying with my Mom for 2 months (in 2016) as I waited for transfer to take place on my new home. (Those of you who have had to move back home will understand when I tell you that I felt the need to spend time out of the house some evenings. 🙂 (Love you, Mom). I came across a Beginner’s Woodworking Course in Paarden Eiland and signed up for a 5 week course (1 night per week).

Both of my Grandfathers had their own Wood Workshop in their garages and, as much as I used to tinker around with hammers and nails with them, I wish I’d paid more attention and let them teach me more about Woodwork. But, I guess, you’re never too old to learn. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed the course and, once I’d moved into my new home in May 2016, I decided to try my hand at making my own décor and fixing up the home using my newly discovered DIY desire. So began my love affair with woodworking. I started making things around the home that I either needed, or simply wanted, instead of buying them or contracting people to do things for me.

My Grandfather used to whittle and carve beautifully ornate clocks and he would always place the word “Boometime” on the face of each of the clocks. One of the first things I made for myself was a rustic clock and I engraved Boometime onto it in honour of my grandfather….so Boometime was re-born!

After Emmy had Cruciate Ligament surgery and was later diagnosed with Osteoarthritis, I borrowed a friend’s car ramp to help her in-and-out of the car on trips to the vet and physio. The plastic ramp had a sandpaper finish and didn’t provide enough grip for Emmy to use the ramp comfortably.  This is when I decided to build my own ramp for her.  I was then stopped by so many people who saw the ramp, asking where they could buy one…hence the Boometime Car Ramp being born. 🙂  From there, a number of people asked me to build bed ramps and couch ramps and steps for their doggies and I realised this was the best thing EVER for me. Not only did I get to further explore my passion for design and woodworking, but I also got to meet all these awesome doggos and make their lives and their fur-parents’ lives easier! What a win!

MEET OSCAR

NAME: OSCAR
AGE: 8
LOVE: Walks, Food, Balls, Sandra, Treats, People, Cuddles, Granny, Swimming
DISLIKES:  Rain

I didn’t believe in ‘love at first sight’ until I met Oscar. He was saved by an animal rescue organisation after being thrown against a wall as a puppy and suffering a fractured back leg. Yet, he was the most loving, happy boy. Sadly, we lost Oscar to cancer in October of 2019 and life will never be the same again. Oscar would often pop into the workshop to remind me to take a break…and give him some attention. He had the best personality and loved being the centre of attention…and he was the most handsome boy in the world…as you can clearly see. 😉

MEET EMMY

NAME: EMMY
AGE: 10
LOVE: Walks, Food, Sleeping, Sandra, Treats, Tummy Tickles, Granny
DISLIKES:  Loud noises

About a year after adopting Oscar, I had NO garden left and would regularly get calls from the neighbours to let me know that Oscar had dug under the walls (on BOTH sides of the house) to play with his canine friends next door. Enter Emmy, who was rescued along with her 8 siblings and (very scared) mom.  She has a beautiful soul and was almost 3 months old when I adopted her. She and Oscar absolutely loved each other…and I love them both more. Emmy also pops into the workshop every now and then…but leaves whenever power tools are in operation.

Emmy is the reason I started specialising in building dog ramps. After undergoing two cruciate ligament surgeries, she  required a car ramp (she doesn’t like being picked up) and couch ramp so, naturally, I built them for her. (I’ve seen the need for dog ramps for the couch and dog ramps for the bed grow exponentially as people are exposed to the potential dangers of jumping.)

Emmy also, of course has beds in EVERY room of the house. She is my heart.

MEET ZOE

NAME: ZOE
AGE: 9
LOVE: Her Jimmy Chew, light reflections, all people, treats
DISLIKES:  Thunder

Zoe is the smallest in the family, with the biggest attitude. She thinks she rules the roost and, let’s be honest, she probably does. Zoe does NOT like to be excluded and loves to pop into the workshop to see what I’m up to. She is never very far from her favourite toy, her Jimmy Chew (a fluffy reindeer that she carries around with her EVERYWHERE).  If the sun is shining and you’re wearing a watch or holding your cellphone, you will be entertained for hours watching her chase the reflected light like an obsessed cat. Zoe is also affectionately known as “Exhibit A”, as she’s the first in line to test any of the doggie products I make. She is the most trusting soul and I love her with all my heart.

Levi

MEET LEVI

NAME: LEVI
AGE: 6 Months
LOVE: Walks, Food, Chewing holes in blankets, Playing with and meeting new friends
DISLIKES:  Having his face and paws touched

Levi was rescued, along with 4 siblings, by Kerry of The WOW Project. His mom had given birth to a litter of 15 pups and, by the time Kerry was called, 10 had already died.  Levi has been bottle fed since 3 days old (I’ve been bottle feeding him since 11 days old) and he is the ONLY survivor in that litter of 15 pups.  He is my miracle child and he is way too clever for his own good. Being only 6 months old, he’s not really allowed in the workshop yet, because he eats EVERYTHING, but he’s been using ramps around the house (and uses the car ramp every day) since before his eyes opened. (See cutest video ever below).
